It seems the word superfood is thrown out a lot these days. Did you know that the term “superfood” dates back to 1915 when it was first used to describe wine?
So what truly makes a food a superfood? According to the Merriam Webster definition, a superfood is “a food (such as salmon, broccoli, or blueberries) that is rich in compounds (such as antioxidants, fiber, or fatty acids) considered beneficial to a person’s health. Superfoods increase energy and vitality, regulate cholesterol and blood pressure and may help to prevent or fight cancer and other diseases.”
With that being said, superfoods include all colorful fruits and vegetables, heart healthy nuts and seeds, lean proteins like wild game meats and seafood, omega 3-fats, and energizing whole grains like oats, quinoa, millet, and other ancient grains. And yes, wine may contain some heart healthy antioxidants (since it is made from grapes), but you are not drinking wine for the health benefits–you are drinking wine because you like it. (And that’s okay!)
